About Wire Moon Jewelry

Michelle Shearer started wrapping wire at 14 and never put down her tools. In 2015, Michelle created Wire Moon Jewelry to showcase her wire and stone jewelry.

Wire Moon Jewelry is so much more than just weaving wire. Michelle is now a growing lapidary artist who can cut faceted gems and carve stone sculptures.

This small business has grown more than Michelle ever expected it to!

FAQ

What metals are safe for my skin?

Some people have sensitive skin and may react poorly to some metals (myself included!)

Copper: It tends to leave green marks on the skin. This isn't often an issue, but it could cause itching or rarely worst reactions. Our earrings hooks on copper earrings are NOT copper, they are nickel-free and hypoallergenic niobium. I don't recommend you wear any copper jewelry for more than a day. My copper chains are made out of an alloy and may have traces of nickel.

Sterling Silver: Is often safe. It's gentle and doesn't mark the skin as much as copper.

Gold Filled: Is safer than silver, unless you are extremely sensitive and need solid gold.

How do I care for my jewelry?

Although every piece is carefully made by hand, some parts of the wire may still move in places, so if you aren't too careful, it can be bent out of place.

Sterling silver and copper contains metals that react with chemicals found in air and produce tarnish; high moisture levels, exposure to sunlight and contaminants such as salt water increase this reaction. Take steps to protect sterling silver by keeping it in airtight packages, use tarnish-resistant products (such as tarnish tabs or strips) that absorb harmful chemicals, and store sterling in a cool, dry place. Most tarnish is easily removed by polishing with a mild abrasive or soaking in an anti-tarnish solution.

Keep your jewelry clean and dry to prevent oxidation. Take your jewelry off every night and wipe off body oils and sweat with a clean soft cloth. Store in an air-tight container to slow tarnish

Your jewelry is made out of genuine metals. Over time it may oxidize, patina and may stain skin in the process. This reaction is not a defect and varies according to an individual’s body chemistry and the metals in the jewelry.

To shine your copper jewelry: Scrub lightly with a fine 0000 steel wool pad or polishing cloth. Rinse and pat dry with a soft cloth.

To shine your sterling silver jewelry: Buff your jewelry with a polishing cloth. Rinse and pat dry with a soft cloth.

Do you do custom orders?

Yes! I would love to work with you. Go here to start a custom order!

I am currently only doing jewelry custom orders. I am not offering lapidary custom orders at this time.

What kind of tools do you use?

I use a pretty limited selection of tools when it comes to wire wrapping. I use my hands, some vices, and a variety of plyers.

Here are plyers I use: clippers, round nose, needle nose, tweezer nose, flat nose, step round, nylon flat nose, and nylon round nose.

If you are interested in wire wrapping, all you really need is wire, stones, wire clippers, needle nose plyers, round nose plyers and a teacher, book, or YouTube!

Where do you get your stones?

I get my stones from everywhere! I occasionally cut and polish my own. I usually purchase my beads online but rarely do I buy my cabochons online. I purchase most of my cabochons from dealers at gems shows like the Tucson Gem and Mineral Shows and local gem shows in the San Diego area. I try to support small businesses and good cutters when I can!
